Almenkerk Wine Estate is a true family Estate. Owned by the Belgian/Dutch van Almenkerk family and run by Natalie and Joris van Almenkerk. While Joris has fun making the wine (award winning wines!), Natalie is in charge of sales and marketing, PR and admin. Patriarch Joep helps out with sales, frequent wine tastings and as a mentor to the business side. Next to that, we have a dedicated group of family and friends that come out to help us during crunch time, open up the tasting room when we are not around, and - most importantly - they help us sharing a regular bottle (or 2) of our delicious wines.
The Estate was originally an apple farm. Although apple farming is not our core business, it complements the farm nicely. The apple trees are beautiful, especially when flowering. It also keeps our team of labourers busy when there is little else to do. Apart from that, it is hugely gratifying to eat your own apples fresh from the tree! In fact, we have since decided to plant an additional 2.3 ha of Pink Ladies in 2012 and 3.0 ha of Royal Gala in 2014.
Guests are welcomed in our tasting room, which is really more like our living room! We offer both relaxed wine tastings and more technical tastings, depending on your preference. As part of the experience, we also give cellar tours. We make a point of always have a family member available that can answer any of your in-depth questions.
Upon request, we can arrange for vineyard tours and tastings for larger groups.
The Almenkerk Wine Cellar was constructed against the mountainside with wonderful views over the Elgin Valley and the Kogelberg Mountains. The winery consists of the Fermentation Cellar where the wine is made, the Maturation Cellar where the barrels are maturing our wines, two storage buildings and the tasting centre and offices where the wines are served.
